Bhutanese in Germany warns not to denounce citizenship (Diaspora)

Published on Sep 10 2008 // Main News
Germany, August 29: Durga Giri, who has been taking  refuge in Germany for several years, has urged the  resettling folks to have a clear mind set up that they do not denounce their Bhutanese citizenship at the time when the host countries grant them nationality through the process of naturalization.

There is a provision in the International Refugee Law that a conventional refugee can preserve the nationality of the country of origin when he receives the nationality from the host country. The community workers should be aware of this and educate our fellow-countrymen in this regard.

Giri, who is also the General Secretary of Bhutan Peoples' Party, based in Germany said this after paying a weeklong goodwill visit to the Bhutanese in the Netherlands.

Giri, who met almost all the Bhutanese who have reached there prior to resettlement and under it in recent months, expressed his impression that the facilities the exiled Bhutanese get are very good.

"Our people are treated in the best manner", said Giri in a statement issued by his return from the Netherlands.

The Bhutanese people are indebted to the people of core group countries as the western economy is based on human resources, basically the tax payers.

The Dutch government has really appreciated that our people are known for their loyalty, honesty, hard work and productivity in Bhutan, said he adding that soon they will well adjusted in the west by establishing economically and ensuring quality education to their children.

Giri found that folks who reached the Netherlands are very clear in their conscience that their ultimate goal is to return Bhutan and they are grateful to the host country for giving them a safe place to shelter and educate their children.

They are committed to continue to work for repatriation and inclusive democracy in Bhutan. The statement read that after reaching a distant land like the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, these people have started feeling the need of a legal Bhutanese organization in the European soil to preserve their language, cultural heritage, social values and to raise the Bhutanese issue in various national and International forums.

"The dimension of the Bhutanese movement is changed and we have to struggle with much cautions and new strategies", the statement said. Bhutan News Service
