DNC hopes Singh will advise Bhutan king

New Delhi, May 13: Druk National Congress expressed hope that Indian Prime Minister Dr Man Mohan Singh will advise the Bhutanese rulers to end exclusive and elitist democracy.

In a memorandum submitted to Dr Singh on the eve of his visit to Bhutan, DNC president R. K. Dorji said DNC trusts that Indian Prime Minister will support and guarantee Bhutan's sovereignty and integrity and would assist her in International and regional forum as well.

“This will serve as a reminder to the royal 'father and son' duo to resolve the outstanding political crisis, in which our country has been gripped for last two decades,” the memo reads.

Dr Singh is scheduled to visit Thimphu this Friday where he will address the newly elected joint sitting of the National Assembly and National Council.

“Our country is depicted as a country of peace, tranquil and happy nation. But there is a darker and unhappy side behind that external appearance which has been closely guarded. Appearance can be misleading and deceptive. Since last two decades a political crisis has been simmering in our nation. The regime has systematically suppressed the aggrieved groups with brutality, which has no other parallel in contemporary times. The large numbers of security personnel easily overrun our small population,” Dorji said.

He further said, prior to election, the people of Bhutan were denied the fundamental human rights as enshrined in the draft constitution.

He urged India not to be a mute spectator all the time when citizens of Bhutan are brutally suppressed and their fundamental human and democratic rights continue to be denied. Bhutan News Service
