Government appoints officials for cabinet secretariat (City)

Thimpu, June 18: The government has appointed 10 persons to look after the business of the cabinet secretariat related to various issues such as economy, infrastructure, culture, social, agriculture, coordination and monitoring, economic, information, grievances and good governance.

The ruling party Druk Phuensum Tshogpa nominated five from among its party members on contract. Other five are drawn from bureaucracy.

The five person hired on contract include Khandu Om (social), Sangay Thinley (infrastructure), Dr Samdrup (cabinet), Dechen (good governance) and Rinzin Wangchuk (grievance cell).

The five from bureaucracy are Nyim Tshering (agriculture), Sonam Tobgay (economics), Namgay (culture), Duba (information) and Sonam Wangchuk (macro economy).

Prime Minister Jigmi Thinley said the cabinet secretariat would also be the office of the prime minister.

Through the cabinet secretariat functionaries, DPT expects to ensure that its promises stated in the manifesto are implemented during its tenure.

The 10-member team is responsible to see that the plans and programs of the government are being carried out, do research and analysis, discuss any policy issues that may need changes and do field visits and compile reports for the cabinet.

Coordination and monitoring division will look after issues like social, economic, agriculture, culture and infrastructure; economic division will look into the macroeconomic situation of the country, in terms of monetary policies, cash reserves and rupee balance, and financial agencies like RMA and the banks.

No appointments have been made for the third division, which will be responsible for legal affairs including cabinet’s relation with the office attorney general and judiciary.

The cabinet secretariat will also have information office dealing with press release and relation with media; good governance section to look after good governance and the grievance cell that will look into all complaints on service delivery issues. Bhutan News Service
