King signs constitution (Politics)

Thimphu, July 19: At a special function organized in Tashichodzong on Friday King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk signed the constitution of the ‘Kingdom of Bhutan’.

On the occasion, king father Jigme Singye Wangchuk, other royal family members and constitution drafting committee members were present.

The signing ceremony is being organized soon after the prime minister, the executive chief of the country, return from his foreign visit.

Speaking at the function, chairman of the constitution drafting committee chief Justice Sonam Tobgye termed it as the ceremony held in 1907 to establishment of monarchy.

Tobgye appreciated the role played by monarchy for prosperity of the people and the country and expressed hope the Bhutan would further prosper after the monarchy becomes constitutional.

The government had declared the as national constitution day and announced opublic holiday. Earlier, the constitution was planned to be signed on June 2 but on the request of the king, the signing ceremony was delayed. Bhutan News Service
